Schools Minister Andrew Adonis praised the work of supplementary schools and pledged Government support for the development of more and better supplementary schools through, in particular, the extended school and specialist school programmes.

Andrew Adonis was speaking at an evening reception in London which included Ambassadors, high commissioners and representatives from a wide range of supplementary schools.

He said:

"Supplementary schools play a hugely important role in developing the education of children from widely diverse backgrounds. Generations of young people have benefited from the selfless dedication of those who have given up time and energy to set up and run these schools.

"A national survey found that eight out of ten pupils who attended supplementary schools said it helped them with their mainstream school work. Supplementary school activities can bring a tremendous sense of achievement, and can increase confidence and motivation in and out of school."

Andrew Adonis said the government wanted all schools to work with other children's services and the private and voluntary sectors to offer access to a range of extended services from 8am to 6pm. Supplementary schools could play a role in extended schools, and the Government would encourage premises to be made available at no or low cost as appropriate.

He added: "Supplementary schools can also be developed by specialist schools with funding for the development of their specialist activities, particularly in the case of language specialist schools."
